Saugus School Committee to keep Santa Claus in classrooms
SAUGUS (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – Saugus officials made a decision on Thursday that will keep a time-honored tradition in local elementary schools.
The heated debate began in December, when School Superintendant Richard Langlois told firefighters they were not allowed to dress as Santa Claus and deliver coloring books to children in the elementary schools.
Two months later, the debate finally made its way to the School Committee for a decision. One resident wore a Santa suit to Thursday’s meeting as he pleaded with School Committee members to allow the tradition to continue in 2012.
Committee members decided to allow Santa to continue his visits to pre-K and kindergarten classes, but with some added guidelines, that will allow those who do not feel comfortable to opt out of the event.
Firefighters have been handing out gifts to the children of Saugus since 1960.
Superintendent Langlois tried to ban the celebration because of the separation of Church and State.
