BOSTON (AP) – The Massachusetts House of Representatives has approved a bill designed to protect transgender individuals against discrimination in the workplace.
The House voted 95-58 Tuesday in favor of the measure. The bill now heads to the Senate.
The vote followed an hour-long debate. Lawmakers had earlier agreed to cut off debate at 8:50 p.m., meaning many proposed amendments could not be considered.
Republicans said the bill is unnecessary and anti-business, but supporters say it’s an important addition to the state’s civil rights laws.
At a news conference, opponents presented scenarios in which they said a small business such as a day care or grocery store would suffer if an employee suddenly began identifying with the opposite sex; however, supporters of the bill say no one should be fired because of gender identity or expression.
owners, etc. And by leaving out the bathroom provision but not explicitly forbidding it, it STILL allows access to anyone expressing a gender different than the one visually obvious to use any restroom facility they choose. You are free to challenge them but you could face hate crime charges and civil penalties. This is a litigation nightmare.
We NEED you to call members of the Judiciary Committee RIGHT NOW before a 9:30 a.m. deadline Today. The script is very simple:
